Scope and Contents of the Materials

Collection consists of diaries, address books dating from 1885 to 1924. Years 1892, 1893, 1897, 1898 and 1905-1923 are missing. For the 1902 diary, Charles Wilkes used a 1894 dated diary. Newspaper clippings from the Chicago Tribune are also in the collection. The newspaper clippings consist of articles about business and financial news. The diaries are in fair condition, however some of the binding is falling apart.

Biographical Note

Charles Wilkes was born around 1859 in Allegan, Michigan to Charles and Charlotte Wilkes. Charles Wilkes had five siblings. Charles Wilkes later became a business/finance lawyer in Allegan County. He also became a prosecuting attorney for two terms for Allegan County from 1885 to 1889. He was married to Bertha Pritchard.
